We read "The Emperor's New Clothes" and then we created an invoice on what new clothes the Emperor bought. We started with $1000 and then we tried to spend all of his money on clothes, jewelry, electronics, and groceries. We did plays based on fairy tales of The Golden Goose and Little Red Riding Hood. First graders came and watched our dress rehearsal and after that we had parents and grandparents came to watch our performances. Afterwards they came to read our journal writes and see our work on fairy tales. The whole class did fairy tale centers. There were 15 centers we had to complete and we had two weeks to complete them. Some people were fast and some were slower. We had fun reading fractured fairy tales, madlibs, read articles that compared a fairy tale to a real life situation. The final activity will be turning a drawing of our favorite fairy tale into a really cool quilt.

We worked on finishing up our fairy tale stations. We had to complete 10 starred stations to get C and then could earn more by doing at least 14 stations. We acted out plays and then had our parents come to the classroom to see our fairy tale station work. In the Jolly Postman activity we wrote a thank you note, a letter, a postcard, an advertisement, an invitation and an invoice for different fairy tale characters. We are going to put them in envelopes, which we learned how to address correctly, and put them into a book. Each of us will have our own version of the Jolly Postman. We started ISAT tests this week. Everyone tried hard to do their best on them. We took 3 reading, 3 math, and 2 science tests. We started a poetry project in language this week. We have written four different types of poems this week. We wrote acrostic (alphabet), concrete poems (shape poems), free verse (non-rhyming), and bio-poems. We are following the Iditarod race in Alaska. Each student chose a different musher to follow in the race. We are tracking their progress on the classroom wall and Taylor's person is in the lead. Seat of a Lifetime Assembly 3rd-5th grade students attended an assembly today about bullying. There were atheletes from the UofI. There was a swimmer, golfer, two football players, and two basketball players. They did a skit about how to stop bullying on the bus. They gave away tickets to a basketball game and a limo ride to the game to two students. We did a mystery skype call with a class from Surrey, British Columbia, Canada this week. We asked questions to figure out where they were in the world. They did the same to us. We learned how to interpret our remainders in division this week. Miss Leake finished reading a novel called the Janitor's Boy. For the past couple of weeks we have been learning all different types of figurative language including similes and metaphors. This week we wrote a simile and then turned it into a metaphor about ourselves. We had presentations based on our autobiographies. On Monday, we really like Alex's puppet show. Dalton, Maddy, Camille, and Lanie also had a puppet show, Marissa wrote a song and sang it, and everyone else had a collage or timeline. They were really well done! We had choice board that we completed. We had to do a lot of worksheets with our teachers. We also read Meet and Underwater Explorer and worked on the proper word usage of lie and lay, can and may, I and me. We read our autobiographies to Mrs. Boyer's first grade class. They really liked them. They are going to write an autobiography in a few weeks. In P.E. we learned how to rock climb on the climbing wall. It was really fun! We played a game called SWAT. It was really fun. We had to find the right answer to questions that Mrs. Linstead asked us about civil rights. This week in science we did an experiment on matter. We took syrup, water, and oil and poured them into a cup. We dropped green pepper, dried cranberries, and pieces of foil into the cup and then recorded our observations. We found out that oil is on the top, water in the middle and syrup is on the bottom. We had a math test in math. This week we wrote an autobiography. Next we will type it and work on presentations. Those presentations are due on January 21. We got into groups and read a story named Scruffy. Then we wrote problem and solution about the story and how he treated the pups. I learned that Scruffy was a wild wolf and not good at hunting for food but he was good at babysitting the pups. We worked on reading stations for four days. It was a lot of work because there was a lot of work to do. But when we finished the work there was a Jeopardy game to play on the Smart Board that reviewed irregular verbs. We did reading groups with Ms. Leake, Mrs. Fortney, and Mrs. Linstead and there were about six people in each group. We read short stories that were a half point and 5 questions long. Thursday morning we went to an assembly that had a loud drummer. It was awesome because we got to stand up and sing along with him. He showed us how to play several different types of drums. We learned long division with some fun games like Snork's Long Division, Remainder Challenge, and Toss-a-Problem. These games helped improve our long division skills. This week in the computer lab each person had a vocabulary word to find the definition and to find pictures of what their word was. We are going to use these words as a guide after Christmas break. We will have them on a vocabulary wall in the classroom. In math we learned about equivalent fractions. We used fraction kits to see the equivalents and how they compared to each other. We went to the 1st & 2nd grade Christmas concert last week. They sang beautiful songs and danced. We worked on Christmas activities where we made crafts and even got a little snack. We could have made a 3D Christmas tree, a pointsettia, or played around with our senses. We had a math and social studies test last week. Most of us thought they were somewhat easy. In math this week we learned about mode, median, range, and mean. We spent a lot of time putting numbers in order from least to greatest and then figuring out the mode, median, range, and means of those numbers. Mrs. Linstead said the notes were too long to copy so she even printed them out for us to staple in our notebooks. In science we learned about the nervous system. We got to make a Smart Board lesson with our group and a section from the lesson. We will present these to the class on Monday. We started a new novel called the Tale of Despereaux. It is about a mouse who does not conform. Conform means fit in with others.
