We met our new student teacher that will joining us after Christmas Break. Her name is Miss Leake and she is from Eastern Univeristy. She will be with us all semester. We do Scholastic News. First we have to read the newspaper and then answer the questions on the back. We learn about the tallest buildings in New York and that Native Americans are sky walkers. The presidential election results were also inside. We learned about bullying. We watched videos about people bullying other people and how to react if it happens to us. We should STOP, WALK, AND TALK! In science this week we learned about the body parts of the digestive system. We made little people and used yarn to put the intestines, esophagus, and windpipe on it. We also put a stomach.

We had a good behavior party. We had breakfast and we got to eat donuts, drink Sunny D, and just talk while we enjoyed the food. It was delicious! We had a special assembly on Thursday. It was called the NED Show. NED stands for "Never Give Up", "Encourage Others," and "Do Your Best." The presenter told us a story about Ned and how he made bad decisions that effected his whole day. He made us promise to the teacher that we would always do our best and never give up. He did a lot of tricks with yo-yos. We edited our Day in the Life essays. We met with Mrs. Linstead and she helped us with spelling and making our sentences the best the they could be. Next week we are going to record them with our pictures. In reading we did stations about our body. We used a microscope to look at our cheek cells. We also got to look at onion cells, kidney cells, and bunch more. It was fun! In music we had a free day. We played some games and this game was called Musical Freeze. In science we learned about muscles. We did experiments and the picture shows the experiment where we had to figure out which two fingers were connnected. We practiced our Rocket Ship math facts a lot this week. Mrs. Linstead challenged us to pass three tests this week. This week we were practicing the bones of the body. In this picture students are dragging the names of the bones to the correct spot on the skeleton. We took turns using the pointer to drag the bones to the right spot. Here we were taking the scientific names and finding the right spot for them This was another way to identify the bones. We also played Memory to match the scientific bone names with the common bone names. In Art we are painting Indian corn and outlining with colored pencil. This will make them look like they are real. A group a K-Kids helped make a big Capri Sun box. This will hold the empty Capri Sun Drink Pouches which our schools earns money for. We gathered at the couch to read a book together about bones. We are going to start studying the bones of the body. We have to learn the scientific names of about 30 bones in the body. We will test on these next week and we made a skeleton to help us study those bones.
We had an extra recess today as a reward for no late homework assignments and no pink slips. We finished studying the constitution. We are excited about our 4 day weekend. We made a bioglyph in social studies. It is a kind of map of our selves. It told about our families, what we looked like, and things that we like. After we were done everyone hung their bioglyph on the chalkboard. We played a game where we had to identify what bioglyph belonged to each student. Some students were able to figure out 22 out of the 23 students. Everyone in the class had a book that they read and then we made projects about our book. We either made a poster, a mobile, or a book jacket. All the completed projects are hanging on our lockers and you can see the pictures below. On Friday we got to wear pajamas and bring our blanket and pillow to enjoy a movie. We did this because we filled our behavior star so we earned a party. In Language we do sentences that we have to fix. We find capitalization, ending marks, and other punctation mistakes. It helps us with our writing and we will have to do this our whole life. We had a great time learning rhythms in music. We learned 16th notes and played the song "Where is Little Susie." We got new pet lizards in the classroom. We named them Lightning and Asia. They are long-tailed lizards and they are very active during the day. The eat crickets and like to be around the light. They sit there all day. Some students in the class began working on book project. They were to create a mobile or poster about their novel. They really seemed to like doing this project. We sorted through Capri Sun and Kool-aid drink pounches that students had recycled in the cafeteria. K-Kids are collecting these to send in and raise money for the school. Remember: send in any drink pouches from home!! In music we played a game called Where's Susie? This was to combine dance and music together. It was a lot of fun and people were laughing and playing along. In our novel groups this week we focused on learning about character traits and scene settings. We learned that character traits come from the inside of a person and how they treat life and other people. Settings are when and where the story takes place. We worked together to revise our stories. Revising means to improve our writing. We got together and helped each other to make our stories better. We looked for parts in the story that we had questions about. We looked for WOW parts of the story, too. Then finally we edited our stories today. We did this ourselves and corrected our spelling, capitalization, and punctuation mistakes. Finally we recopied our stories. Today was our Grandparent's Day. We took pictures of everyone and their grandparents. We gave them a tour of our school and we had breakfast together. We showed our classroom, artroom, and they joined us for Meet and Greet. There were over 300 grandparents in attendance. Mrs. Linstead gave us a work list today. This was a list of activities that we needed to finish before the end of the day. It included many things we had started earlier in the week but needed to complete. We worked on our own for most of the morning and the afternoon. She said we did so well that in the middle of the morning she gave us a dance break. We can really bust a move, can't we! This was our second coffee hour. Today we read our novels instead of reading Scholastic News. Each novel group met and discussed last night's reading assignment and then set a goal for the day. Then we found a spot in the room and started reading. So far we have completed five lessons out of 70 in our math notebook. It is a lot easier to take notes than what we thought it was going to be. One nice thing about it is that the notes are in order and you can find what you need quicker and easier. In art class, we began a surfboard project. This project started out with drawing a rough draft. In the draft we drew 2 surfboards and designed them but in a smaller scale. Then we traced a surfboard onto construction paper and copied one of our designs onto that. After tracing we colored the surfboards. We are at that stage of the process now. In science this week we studied the skills of estimating and measuring. We played a game where we had to guess how many jelly beans were in the jar. It was fun to do but we were not very good at it. On Friday, we did an activity where we estimated how many raisins were in a box of Raisin Bran. We also talked about the skill of inferring. We practiced making inferences by going to some websites and looking ads. We tried to figure out what the ads were trying to tell us about the products. We learned about the 6 traits involved in good writing: ideas, voice, sentence fluency, word choice, conventions, and organization. We did our first prewriting and first draft of a how to article. It was a fun week and we learned a lot. But, we are all looking forward to the long weekend! Coffee Hour: Coffee Hour was our time on Friday morning to read the Scholastic News and drink our "coffee." (Coffee being our milk.) We got to kick and put our feet up on the desks, lay on the floors, crash on the couch, and generally kick back and read about the presidential election and putting advertisements on school buses. We also learned about poisonous frogs and some very old statues. Science: We began studying the scientific method this week. We learned about how scientists use the skills of observation and classifying quite often in their investigations. We practiced those skills by classifying different types of candy, writing utensils, books, and misc. classroom items. It was fun especially when we got to eat a piece of candy at the end of the activity. In music class we got to play different instruments to practice rhythms. We were very busy this week. We finished our novel, Chocolate Fever, took our first 2 minute time test, and played around with Smart Notebook. From these activities we set some goals for the weekend and next week. First, we need to practice our multiplication facts. Otherwise our homework assignments will take a long time in the future. Second, we need good listening ears in the the computer lab because Mrs. Linstead gives a lot of directions. Third, we can't wait to start our next novel on Monday. |
